Munneshwaram Temple

Munneswaram Temple is a renowned Hindu temple located in Chilaw, a town in the northwest coast of Sri Lanka. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the five ancient temples on the island, known as Pancha Ishwarams. According to legend, the temple was established by Lord Rama, the protagonist of the Hindu epic, Ramayana. It is believed that Lord Rama visited the site during his exile and installed the lingam, a sacred symbol of Lord Shiva, at the temple. The temple complex includes several shrines, each dedicated to a different deity, including Lord Ganesha and Goddess Parvati.

Manavari Temple

The temple is dedicated to Lord Rama and is believed to be the first temple in the world to be dedicated to him. The temple is an important pilgrimage site for Hindus, and thousands of devotees visit it every year. According to legend, Lord Rama, visited Sri Lanka to rescue his wife Sita, who was abducted by the demon king Ravana. Lord Rama is said to have prayed to Lord Shiva at several locations throughout Sri Lanka, including Manavari Temple. It is believed that Lord Rama installed a lingam, a sacred symbol of Lord Shiva, at the temple, which is still present today.

  • Sightseeing at Isurumuniya Temple (Rishi Visravasmuni)
  • This stone monument placed at the celebrated Vessamuniya presently known as Isurumuniya Viharaya is of a bare bodied personality in deep meditation and significant bearing. A head of a horse can be seen behind the right shoulder. This sculpture has a head dressing and a “sacred thread” (poona noola)- a thread which is worn by ancient monastic personnel can be seen. The histories of these monuments are not properly explored by the archaeologists. They have a very irregular view about this outstanding sculpture and have named it as “Man and Horse”. How they have come to these conclusions are not known. This celebrated sculpture is of Rishi Visravasmuni and his white horse.

  • Proceed to Lakegala – Mythical palace site of Ravana
  • Located near Meemure village in Matale District. The conical shaped mountain rises to a height of about 1,255M. As per to the legend, the palace complex of Ravana was in Lakegala and therefore, his treasures and the jeweler and costume of Sita are buried in this place. And, it is believed that this rock was broken into 5 by the arrow of Rama.

  • Sita Kotuwa or Sita Matha’s court is an archeological site which directly linked to the Ramayana trail Sri Lanka located at Gurulupotha, Hasalaka in Central Province of Sri Lanka. It is believed that Sita Kotuwa in Gurupotha Hasalaka is one of the places where Princess Sita was kept by King Ravana. This is one of the very important Ramayana trail Sri Lanka sites.   • Dunuwila is the place where where Lord Rama fired the Brahmaastharam at King Ravana, which eventually killed him. Dunu means arrow and Vila Means Lake. This place got its name because Lord Rama fired his arrow from this lake. Dunuwila is an important place of where it is considered as one of the most famous Ramayana Sites of Sri Lanka.
